Capturing Moments of Joy in Saitama, Japan

While they celebrate the present, Lartigue’s photographs also conceal his palpable anguish about the passing of time; he felt photography might be capable of preserving happiness, of preventing its disappearance. Such precious, fleeting moments are highlighted in the exhibition “Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Capturing Moments of Joy” at the Saitama Modern Art Museum, Kita-Urawa Park, Saitama, Japan (9-30-1 Tokiwa, Urawa-ku, Saitama 330-0061, Saitama Prefecture, Japan) from April 5 to May 22, 2016.

In black and white and in color, these images reflect his love for both techniques, which allowed him, each in its own way, to express a certain aspect of his intention. “I am unable to say whether I prefer color photographs to black and white, or vice versa,” he explained in his book, Mon livre de photographie. “Both respond to different interests, and both are irreplaceable; and what is more, their contrasting qualities complete each other…”
